G. Patrick Teran
Born in Ecuador and imported at a very young age to America, I grew up absorbing the American culture through cartoons! With a penchant for overuse of the phrase, “I said, I said,” it’s safe to assume that I also picked up the english language from Foghorn Leghorn! As a child caught between two cultures, I learned early on that art was a universal language. My mother often recalls the time when she scolded me at the age of five (for something that was most definitely not my fault!) and I sat in the kitchen drawing away, feverishly. When I was done, I walked up to my mom and showed her my illustration of what she looked like to me at that moment. Compensation for my first caricature was more time sitting in the corner!
Art has played a large role in my family history. My Great-Grandfather, Daniel Reyes, founded an art school in Ecuador. I attended the Daniel Reyes art school (Instituto Superior Tecnológico de Artes Plasticas) as a student, while spending time abroad at age fifteen. Having never been to an art school before, my experience was nothing short of magical! My passion and love for art grew. The decision to pursue art as a career came naturally.
When first beginning out as an artist, I had the opportunity to show my work to one of my personal heroes, Marvel Comics’ living legend, Stan Lee. Stan gave me some much appreciated advice, “don’t give up, you’re very talented.” I furthered my formal training by completing the Intro to Cartooning workshop at The Kubert School. I also attended illustration and life drawing classes at Bergen Community College. I am largely self-taught and believe in constant learning.
Professionally, one of my biggest thrills has been the time I freelanced in the graphics department at MAD Magazine. I worked directly under MAD’s Art Director, Sam Viviano- a cartoonist I’d long admired. I still fondly reminisce looking up vomit references on the web with Sam for a photo illustration I was handed to illustrate!
